  The Normandy I Love
A week with JoAnn and Don Baker at the Manoir du Frene

Sunday: Arrive by train or car where you will be met by the Bakers in time for dinner at Manoir du Frene. The rest of the week will be made up of any number of the suggestions listed below:

  • spend the morning at the local weekly market in our town and soak up the local culture buying ingredients for dinner, having a coffee and watching the lively social interaction.
  • prepare a French dinner using what we have found at market (this is for the men as well!)
  • hike the hills and stroll the forests of the area...France has 25,000 miles of walking trails and we have access in this region to all of its diversity: the rolling hills, the ancient forests and the seacoast.
  • visit Caen, the ancient home of William the Conqueror, now a modern hub of business and government.  See the cathedral where he is buried and catch the flavor of Norman history in Caen's Norman history museum, a treasure of exhibits depicting life in ancient times.
  • spend the afternoon visiting the incredible Bayeux Tapestry, the cathedral and the charming town itself. The tapestry was commissioned by Odo, William’s half brother and bishop of Bayeux, to commemorate the victory of the Normans over the English in 1066 and is an amazing 210ft long!
  • visit a local chateau which is being restored by a young French woman as her life's project.
  • meet English-speaking expatriates who have bought and restored old farmhouses and barns and are restoring them bit by bit, and turning them into beautiful homes as well as rental property.
  • visit a local farm where ducks are raised for every product possible, including the often criticized process for fattening the birds for foie gras.
  • experience the windy beaches of Omaha and Utah, where the largest land invasion in the world's history took place 65 years ago.
  • visit the Peace Memorial, an unusual museum depicting the horrors of WWII, but with the uplifting message of peace as its aftermath.
  • see the home of Norman artist Jean-Francois Millet,  whose work predated and influenced the Impressionists.

Saturday: After a leisurely breakfast, say “Au Revoir” to all things Norman and be driven to the train station or pick up a rental car to enjoy your next adventure.

So many things to do in this bucolic area of France - what a special place to call home during your visit!

Don and JoAnn Baker
In 1994, a retired American couple, Don and JoAnn Baker bought a 400 year old manor house in the rolling hills of Normandy, France, and opened an entirely new chapter in their lives.  Since that date, they have welcomed many visitors to their summer home and have shared with them their love of all things French.

Pont de Hoc

JoAnn speaks fluent French and is an accomplished chef and former restaurant owner.  She loves to cook and shop for food in a country known for the quality of its raw materials.  In addition, she is an avid gardener who maintains the gardens of the manor and is an enthusiastic amateur historian as well.

Normandy American Cemetary and Memorial

Don loves to share his passion for vintage cars, one of which he uses to pick up guests at the train station.   And like his wife, enjoys French culture and the history that surrounds them.  You can't be around Don without being engaged in his story-telling.  Give him an opening line and away he goes!  Don also is in charge of the maintenance on the property and can fix anything with a motor, a moving part, or a microchip!

Norman Dairy Cows

The area where the Bakers live is rich in history, culture and natural beauty.  It is home to the D-Day Landing Beaches of World War II, the famous Bayeux Tapestry, miles of spectacular coastline, where France's finest oysters and mussels are farmed, and the wooded pastures home to the beautiful Norman dairy cow, producer of the milk, butter and cream for which Normandy is famous.
